Series and Parallel Application of Electrolytic Capacitors

In the application process, electrolytic capacitors are often selected to form capacitor banks for series application or parallel application due to insufficient capacity or withstand voltage level. Under what circumstances do we need to select series or parallel connection? The details are as follows:
1、 Electrolytic capacitors are used in series
When we need a withstand voltage level of 700V or higher, a single capacitor cannot be satisfied. At present, the highest voltage capacitor in China is a 700V capacitor, and the price is relatively expensive. Then we can choose two 400V or more 400V capacitors to use in series. When used in series, the capacity of the electrolytic capacitor will decrease and the withstand voltage value will increase.
2、 Parallel use of electrolytic capacitors
When we need a large amount of capacitance, a single capacitance cannot meet our requirements due to the limitation of volume. At this time, we can choose multiple capacitors in parallel to form an electrolytic capacitor bank. When used in parallel, the capacity of the electrolytic capacitor will increase and the withstand voltage level will be inconvenient.
When capacitors are used in parallel or in series, pay attention to the polarity of capacitors. The positive and negative electrodes of electrolytic capacitors shall not be connected inversely. During welding, be careful not to solder or have poor contact. If the installation is improper, it may cause voltage withstand or insufficient capacity, resulting in excessive current of electrolytic capacitors, heating, and even explosion.
